Moved on to a second round of consideration
All three South Bay cities are moving on to a second phase of evaluation by the Mountain View company looking to expand its Google Fiber Internet and television service. A total of 34 cities were initially being considered, including nearby Mountain View and Palo Alto, along with major metros like Atlanta, Nashville and Portland.
In a news release this week, Santa Clara utility provider Silicon Valley Power announced that the city home to tech companies like Nvidia, Palo Alto Networks and Citrix has moved on to a second round of consideration. It follows the lead of San Jose and Sunnyvale, which have each also recently gotten initial good reviews.
"Google will now examine factors that may affect construction plans, such as topography, housing density and the permit process," the release note. "A decision on whether or not to proceed with the Google-funded fiber project is expected by the end of the year."
Meanwhile, Google's hometown of Mountain View has not officially gotten the go-ahead, but city spokesperson Shonda Ranson said that the City Council will hold a meeting in closed session next Tuesday "concerning Google Fiber."
